You Don't Need a Unicorn. You Need the Right Person for Right Now.

Every business owner, at some point, goes looking for the same person. Someone who can handle the emails, keep the books, post on socials, answer the phone, and maybe do a bit of sales on the side.

That person doesn't exist. And if they do, they're not very good at most of it.
Here's the thing nobody tells you - the skills and personality traits that make someone excellent at one type of work are often the exact opposite of what makes someone great at another.
Think about it this way.
A great bookkeeper is detail-oriented, process-driven, methodical, and comfortable doing the same thing consistently and accurately. Those are exactly the traits you want managing your numbers.
A great social media person is creative, reactive, comfortable with ambiguity, and energised by variety. Completely different wiring.
A strong BDM is outgoing, resilient to rejection, motivated by outcomes, and thrives under pressure. Different again.
Expecting one person to do all of these well isn't just unrealistic - it's setting them up to fail and setting yourself up for disappointment.
So how do you figure out what you actually need?
Start with pain, not tasks. Ask yourself three questions:
What is costing me the most time right now? Not what you dislike - what is genuinely eating hours that could be spent elsewhere.
What keeps slipping that has real consequences? The thing that when it falls through the cracks, you feel it. A missed follow-up. A late invoice. A week of silence on socials.
What's the one thing that, if someone else owned it completely, would change how my week feels?
That's usually your first hire.
It won't cover everything. It's not supposed to. But it will solve the problem that's actually holding you back right now - and that's worth more than a half-capable generalist trying to do five jobs at once.
The unicorn hire almost always ends in a rehire six months later. The right hire for right now builds a foundation you can actually add to.
If you're not sure what your first hire should actually be, the Hiring Roadmap is where to start. For a small investment, we work through the role, the person, and whether local or offshore is the right fit for your situation – and you keep the Roadmap regardless of what you decide next.
